Electricity · Plan types

Every electricity plan structure, explained.

The rate on the ad is only half the story. Plan structure decides what you actually pay — here is how each one works and who it suits.

Electricity service

See electricity rates at your address

Deregulated markets only. Free to compare, with no obligation.

Fixed-rate electricity

A fixed-rate plan locks your price per kilowatt-hour for the length of the contract. Your bill still moves with how much you use, but the rate behind it will not change when the market spikes in July or January.

From 10.9¢/kWh6 – 36 months

Best for: Households that want a predictable bill and plan to stay at the address at least a year

Variable-rate electricity

A variable rate can change every billing cycle with the wholesale market. It can be a bargain in mild months and painful during extreme weather — which is why we always show you what the same usage would cost on a fixed plan.

From 9.8¢/kWhNo term

Best for: Short stays, in-between moves, or anyone who wants to leave with no exit fee

Month-to-month electricity

No contract, no exit fee, and no long-term price promise. Month-to-month is the right call when your address is temporary or you want to keep the lights on while you compare longer plans.

From 11.4¢/kWhRolling monthly

Best for: Renters on short leases, sublets, and people between homes

Prepaid electricity

Prepaid plans let you buy electricity before you use it, usually with no credit check and no deposit. You get daily usage alerts and top up your balance like a phone plan.

From 12.2¢/kWhNo term

Best for: Anyone who wants power on quickly without a credit check or deposit

No-deposit electricity

A deposit can run $150–$400 when you start service. No-deposit plans waive it — either through a prepaid balance, a satisfactory credit check, or a letter of credit from your previous supplier.

From 11.6¢/kWhNo term – 24 months

Best for: Movers who do not want several hundred dollars tied up at a new address

Green energy

Green plans match your usage with renewable energy certificates from wind and solar generation. In most deregulated markets they now price within a cent of conventional plans.

From 11.1¢/kWh12 – 36 months

Best for: Households that want a 100% renewable match without paying a premium

Time-of-use electricity

These plans price electricity differently by hour — free nights, free weekends, or cheaper overnight windows. They pay off only if you can genuinely shift laundry, dishes, and EV charging off-peak.

From 12.9¢/kWh12 – 24 months

Best for: EV owners, night-shift households, and anyone who can move heavy usage off-peak

Electricity is a separate ScoutRoo service from home internet. Rates shown are illustrative market averages — confirm terms on the supplier's facts label before enrolling.
