Fixed vs variable rates
A fixed rate locks your price per kWh for the whole term. A variable rate can move every month — cheap in mild weather, painful in a heat wave.
ScoutRoo Electricity
Electricity shopping is designed to be confusing. We normalize every plan to a rate per kWh and an estimated monthly bill at your real usage — then let you enroll with a licensed supplier.

A fixed-rate plan locks your price per kilowatt-hour for the length of the contract. Your bill still moves with how much you use, but the rate behind it will not change when the market spikes in July or January.
From 10.9¢/kWh · 6 – 36 months
A variable rate can change every billing cycle with the wholesale market. It can be a bargain in mild months and painful during extreme weather — which is why we always show you what the same usage would cost on a fixed plan.
From 9.8¢/kWh · No term
No contract, no exit fee, and no long-term price promise. Month-to-month is the right call when your address is temporary or you want to keep the lights on while you compare longer plans.
From 11.4¢/kWh · Rolling monthly
Prepaid plans let you buy electricity before you use it, usually with no credit check and no deposit. You get daily usage alerts and top up your balance like a phone plan.
From 12.2¢/kWh · No term
A deposit can run $150–$400 when you start service. No-deposit plans waive it — either through a prepaid balance, a satisfactory credit check, or a letter of credit from your previous supplier.
From 11.6¢/kWh · No term – 24 months
Green plans match your usage with renewable energy certificates from wind and solar generation. In most deregulated markets they now price within a cent of conventional plans.
From 11.1¢/kWh · 12 – 36 months
These plans price electricity differently by hour — free nights, free weekends, or cheaper overnight windows. They pay off only if you can genuinely shift laundry, dishes, and EV charging off-peak.

A fixed rate locks your price per kWh for the whole term. A variable rate can move every month — cheap in mild weather, painful in a heat wave.
Base charges, minimum-usage fees and bill credits can swing your effective rate by cents per kWh. We surface them next to the headline number.
Longer terms usually mean lower rates and higher exit fees. Match the term to how long you expect to stay at the address.
100% renewable plans are often within a cent of conventional ones. If green matters to you, it rarely costs much extra.
