Typical monthly usage
A studio apartment often lands near 400 kWh a month. A three-bedroom home with central air is commonly 1,100–1,600 kWh in summer. Electric heat or an EV can push a household past 2,000 kWh.
- Studio or 1-bedroom apartment: 350–600 kWh
- 2-bedroom home: 700–1,000 kWh
- 3–4 bedroom home with central AC: 1,100–1,800 kWh
- Add 250–400 kWh per month for an EV
The big four
Heating and cooling, water heating, the refrigerator, and the dryer account for most of a typical bill. Everything else is rounding error by comparison.
Why usage decides the plan
Plans with bill credits reward high usage. Flat-rate plans favor small households. Matching your real number to the right structure is worth more than shaving a tenth of a cent off the headline rate.
Questions people ask
Where do I find my actual usage?
Your utility's online portal shows 12–24 months of kWh history, often hour by hour with a smart meter.
Does usage change by season?
Sharply. Summer cooling can double a Texas household's usage between April and August.
