Before you switch
Pull your last 12 bills, note your average monthly kWh, and check your current contract's end date and early termination fee. If you are inside 14 days of the end date, most suppliers waive the fee.
The five steps
Switching is a paperwork change between suppliers, coordinated through your utility.
- 1. Enter your ZIP and compare plans at your true monthly usage
- 2. Check the facts label for base charges and credit thresholds
- 3. Enroll online or by phone with your service address and ID
- 4. Your new supplier notifies the utility and schedules the switch
- 5. The change takes effect on your next meter read — no outage
After the switch
Expect one final bill from the old supplier and set a calendar reminder for 30 days before your new term ends. Rolling onto a holdover variable rate is the single most common way households overpay.
